An unprecedented rip-cutting solution for table saws

A high quality rip fence is essential for a table saw to achieve desirable cutting precision and safety. The most popular table saw rip fence in the market has been the “T-square” style design and it has been around for many decades. The “T-square” rip fence is generally working fine for the purpose, but obviously it is far from being ideal in terms of positioning accuracy, repeatability, and ease of operations. Woodworkers normally need to make several “trial & error” cuts before reaching a satisfactory precision due to the sloppy fence rail guiding, fence body deflection (cantilever), and structural displacement by locking force. The whole fence system is simply not rigid and stable.

With these issues in mind for long time, the Harvey team has been committed to design a completely new rip fence system for woodworkers to address the above problems. Now we are excited to announce our brand new development: The BIG EYE Rip Fence System!

The BIG EYE Rip Fence System (Patent Pending) revolutionizes rip cutting positioning with two major break-through structural designs: The Dual-axis Linear Guide Rail System, and the Synchronized Dual-end Fence Locking Mechanism.

The Linear Guide enables the fence glide on rails smoothly with Zero clearance and minimal friction, also it makes the fence gliding motion accuracy within astonishing 0.15mm (0.006”) throughout the full rail length.

Patent Notice: This product is protected by one or more patents.

The Synchronized Dual-end Locking Mechanism allows for “Single Action” to lock the both ends of the fence which literally eliminate the deflective drifting of the fence body during   cutting. These two major innovative   designs dramatically create the   exceptional rip cutting precision and repetition reliability.

Like other Harvey products, every part of the BIG EYE Rip Fence System is precision machined or ground from aircraft aluminum alloy, hardened steel or stainless steel. Every detail of the BIG EYE Rip Fence is dedicatedly designed and crafted for the best experience of users functionally and aesthetically. We truly believe the BIG EYE Rip Fence System will greatly improve your table saw cutting performance, working experience and the joy of woodworking!

The Dual-axis Linear Guide Rail System

At the core of the Big Eye Rip Fence System lies the Dual-axis Linear Guide Rail System, featuring eight rollers with bearings that effortlessly glide along the two hardened and ground steel rods with zero clearance. This innovative design replaces traditional bushing sliding friction with smooth rolling friction, resulting in exceptional accurate fence movement (0.15mm in full length).

The system includes four fixed bearings and four adjustable bearings, eliminating gaps between the bearings and steel rods, thus maintaining parallelism between the fence and the saw blade and enabling clearance free gliding motion.

The steel rods undergo surface hardening, ensuring long-term durability even with extended use.

To enhance the security of the fence during gliding, the guide rail ends are equipped with flip stops that can be easily moved out of the way, allowing effortless removal of the fence from either end of the guide rail as needed. The Sealing covers and felt on the sliding bases effectively minimize dust interference, ensuring smooth operation even in dusty environments.

The Synchronized
Dual-end Fence Locking Mechanism

Dual-end Clamping controlled by the linkage mechanism

Front end clamping mechanism

Rear end clamping mechanism

The innovative Synchronized Dual-end Fence Locking Mechanism enables simultaneous clamping of the fence on to the solid front and rear guide rail bodies. The synchronized dual-end clamping mechanism allows for “Single Action” locking, and prevents the fence from deflective drifts during cutting. With the fence locked in place, the accuracy of the fence position remains within 0.02mm (0.0008”!)

The Synchronized Dual-end Fence Locking mechanism allows for the fence's load capacity up to 300N, effectively preventing any displacement of the fence during cutting and ensuring safety.

The accuracy of fence position remains within 0.02mm (0.0008”).

The Polished Stainless Steel Locking/Release Handle is uniquely installed on the top of the fence for intuitive and user-friendly operations. Compared to the traditional lower-mounted locking level, the BIG EYE Handle will eliminate the risk of user’s leg injuries by level collisions during work.

The Independent Clamping Force Adjustments

The BIG EYE Rip Fence System is designed to allow for independent adjustments of the clamping force at both ends of the fence using easy adjustment knobs.

The Versatile Fence Positions

The BIG EYE Rip Fence System features a standard high/low fence plate to accommodate different wood thicknesses. The high fence is designed for cutting thick wood, while the low fence is suitable for thin wood.

Switching between the two fence positions is effortless with the sliding scale.

The fence plate can be installed on either left or right side of the fence body, facilitating usage on both sides of the saw blade.

Additionally, the fence plate can be conveniently slid to the front of the saw blade, providing cross-cut positioning without the risk of kickback.

The Micro Adjustment,
Fence Flip Stops and the K9 Glass Viewers

The BIG EYE Rip Fence System also features a Micro-adjustment knob for extremely fine fence positioning with ease. The knob is designed to be a intuitive hand roller.

To achieve your streamline repetitive cutting tasks of various sizes, the BIG EYE Rip Fence System comes with four (4) built-in Flip Position Stops for your quick and comfortable operations.

In order to make the position reading much more comfortable and easy, the BIG EYE Rip Fence System introduces a very special scale viewer: The K9 Crystal Glass Window. The K9-grade glass boasts an impressive light transmittance of up to 92% and exceptional hardness, ensures minimal visual errors (parallax) when reading measurements, offering superior durability and resistance to wear.

*K9 glass is a crystalline form of silica and falls into the category of optical glass. It is renowned for its exceptional transparency, and the products crafted from it are referred to as crystal glass artifacts. It finds extensive applications in various fields, particularly in optical coating. The composition of K9 glass is as follows: SiO2 = 69.13%, B2O3 = 10.75%, BaO = 3.07%, Na2O = 10.40%, K2O = 6.29%, As2O3 = 0.36%. The optical constants of K9 glass are as follows: refractive index = 1.51630, dispersion = 0.00806, Abbe number = 64.06.

Metric Scale

Imperial Scale

The fence is equipped with scales in both metric and imperial units, providing measurement flexibility. The imperial ruler offers a resolution of 1/32", while the metric ruler achieves a resolution of 1mm.

BIG EYE B36

I am a Canadian customer who decided to upgrade the fence on my old 1.5HP Steel City table saw. I read reviews for, and was very impressed with, the Harvey BIG EYE B36 fence system, discovered the ALPHA series of table saws, and after further thought, decided replacing, rather than upgrading my existing saw, made sense.

I initially planned to buy a Harvey ALPHA AW110TC-36PRO table saw possibly upgraded with the Shark S-12S overhead guard, since I was not keen on the standard riving knife-mounted dust collection arm nor Harvey's Compass MG-36 Pro miter gauge -- neither of which I wanted, the former because reviews were poor and the latter because I already have an excellent Hongdui MG-21BS miter gauge. Nevertheless, I talked myself into buying the whole saw package (and several accessories) -- planning to sell my existing saw and whichever miter gauge I decided was less desirable -- and was in the process of making the purchase when I discovered that discounts that were supposed to be applied on checkout were not showing up. I cancelled the purchase pending answers from customer service about the discounts and the policy on substitutions.

I also went to the US site to check whether it might be possible to buy from the US, rather than the Canadian outlet. I was not terribly surprised to find a US purchase was not allowed, but dismayed to find that, while list prices are equivalent, Harvey's "Sale" pricing is radically different in Canada and the US. The "sale" discount on the list price in effect on the two sites was CA$450 lower in Canada, but US$800 lower in the US, which is over CA$1100!! I subsequently was informed that Harvey only sell specific packages and substitution or removal of components is not allowed.

In reaction to a combination of price discrimination and the no substitution policy I decided to stay with my current saw but upgrade it with the BIG EYE fence system.

It took only a few days for the fence system to arrive, well packed in two sturdy boxes. It took me about 4 hours (split over two days) to replace the stock rails and fence with a Harvey BIG EYE fence system (B36 version) and adjust/calibrate the system. I overlooked a step in adjusting the rear locking mechanism (my bad), but that error allowed me to note that even without the rear lock engaged the fence has minimal deflection. That said, when I got the lock properly adjusted the fence became rock solid.

Numerous features attracted me to the BIG EYE (See here for an excellent overview (https://youtu.be/cxFydEIw444)), but in particular the easy roll rail-mounted fence, 2 point locking, and the precision readout system for setting cut dimensions, but also the adaptability of the system to a wide range of saws other than Harvey's own. My old Steel City saw was not on the list of models the BIG EYE was advertised to fit, but the it complied with the size range and type of table (27"-31.5" cast iron table) and it seemed likely the eccentric-head mounting bolts would accommodate my saw.

It proved to be a bit of an issue to mount, in that I had to drill out the 5/16"-18 tapped mounting holes used on the Steel City saw to allow the M8 Harvey bolts to be used, and I had to grind away 1-2mm of a strut under the left table that prevented attaching to washers and nut to retain the Harvey bolt, and the final position of the Harvey rails was about 1mm higher than optimum even with the eccentric heads on the Harvey bolts in their lowest orientation. That said, he system functions perfectly and is a huge improvement. I strongly recommend it.
